The chicken (Gallus gallus domesticus) is a domesticated fowl, a subspecies of the Red Junglefowl. As one of the most common pets and extended, with a population of over 24 million in 2003, there are more chickens in the world than any other species of bird. Humans keep chickens primarily as a source of food, consuming their meat and their eggs. The chicken "culinary and cultural domination" might be considered surprising to some in light of their national origin and purpose and believes has "inspired contributions to culture, art, cuisine, science and religion" from antiquity to the present.
